There is a danger associated with it.
Inhaling a lot of helium will displace oxygen from the lungs. Obviously your body will not be able to take up oxygen until you breath out and re-inhale air.
You may think that this is no worse than holding your breath for a short while, however, the lack of oxygen in your lungs will cause the oxygen in your blood to leave the blood and into the lungs. This will reduce the amount of oxygen in your blood much quicker than just holding your breath would.
If you happen to be in an excited state, maybe dancing etc etc at a party, the rate at which oxygen leaves your system may be much faster than if you are at rest. The end result can be a sudden loss of consciousness resulting in a fall. This has ended in death in a number of cases.

It's completely safe. When I worked for NZ Industrial Gases we used to breathe helium from cylinders to make our voices squeaky. Helium is completely inert. Party balloons usually contain balloon gas, which is a mix of helium and hydrogen. Hydrogen is non-poisonous but explosive. Helium is expensive. So balloon gas doesn't contain enough hydrogen to be explosive but it's cheaper than helium. Even so I wouldn't take any chances with naked flames.

No, helium isn't a drug. It does not work together with any of your physique chemistry. the clarification it adjustments the voice is through fact helium is far less dense than air (like air is far less dense than water) so your vocal chords vibrate speedier.

Just don't do it in excess and you will be fine. If done in excess the oxygen will be replaced with helium in your lungs and you will die. But just a few of times isn't going to hurt. Have fun!
