Because the cows had e. coli and cow manure was used to fertilize the spinach.

There is no cause determined yet, but theorizing, I'd say it's due to the fertilizer. The base product of most fertilizers is manure. E.coli is bacteria found in the intestinal tract of animals and humans. Need I say more?

the spinach was contaminated, probably by cow manure which was spread on to the fields before planting.

because the mexicans who are picking the spinach are pooping on it, they have no where else to go.
