Correct, as cited above, pulmonary embolus is a life threatening problem. If they described the situation as involving both the heart and lung, they may be describing a saddle embolus, which the largest kind and straddles the bifurcation or fork where the pulmonary artery divides, and the clot is large enough to also back up into the heart.
If she is still alive, that is one good sign. A couple of years ago, New England Journal published an article about successfully treating one, and I am sure they have come a long way in the treatment of them.
It is still very much a touch and go situation and will be for several days. I need to be honest here with you, she may not make it, but it sounds like she is in good medical hands. If prayer helps you, this would be a good time to try that.
My thoughts are with you.

This could be a serious problem. Maybe you could speak with the doctor to get a real prognosis. Most of the time when blood clots travel to heart or lungs it means death but the doctors usually give cumoden and it thins the clots so they can pass through without anything fatal happening. Pray for her if you are a Christian. I sure they are doing everything possible for her. It's rare that anyone dies from blood clots due to surgery these days. They have all kinds of medicine that can help.

Some of the others are correct, its a pulmonary embolus and it could be serious if they cannot get the clots out. Basically, there is an obstuction preventing air from getting to the lungs and blood from getting to and from the heart, which means the body is not getting energy to function. Oxygen deprivation for the brain is very serious, it could damage everyday functioning. I hope they are able to thin the blood in time and can prevent and brain damage. Best advice, support your cousin and be there for him, physically or emotionally. Pray that she may come out of this healthy and cherish her child's birth.

This means her health is in serious danger. Blood clots are bad enough but to have them in your lungs or heart is real bad. Please pray for her and hope god guides doctor down the right path to help her recover. How is the baby?? I hope for her and the baby's sake she pulls through this. I will pray for her..
