There are no "necessities" except a car seat, really.
If you're nursing, you won't need bottles until you go back to work, feel ready to leave your baby with someone else, or start offering water occasionally (probably not until the summer).
You don't say when your baby is due?
A fall winter baby needs a few hats, lots of onesies, socks, and some swaddling blankets. If you want to dress the baby up more, some cotton sleepers are nice.
It's nice to have a car seat cover, too, so you don't have to fool around with jackets.
Johnson&Johnson's head-to-toe baby wash is nice, later on, when you really need to wash them more. And a winter baby probably needs some sort of lotion, too.
A bouncy seat.
A swing. (Fisher-Price makes an awesome tiny little travel swing that my daughters loved...)
The TinyLove mobile is great.
An ear thermometer.
Don't feel like you have to buy a stroller/car seat "travel system." Those can be really unwieldy. Pick the car seat that fits your car, your baby, and your pocketbook. And then go shopping for strollers. Most strollers have adapter kits that will allow them to work with the most common infant car seats. So really think about what you'll DO with a stroller, and find one that fits your needs. (i.e. if you live somewhere with lots of snow, or you do a lot of all-terrain walking, you'll want something different than if all you do is run errands and go to the mall, you know? And if you use public transportation, you definitely don't want one of those bulky travel systems!) You'll use a stroller for years, so it's definitely worth thinking about it. Check out the Yahoo! StrollerSWAP group.
If you're thinking about a baby carrier, I think the Ergo is the best one. And you can use it forever. If need be, I can still haul my three-year-old in it. I didn't like slings, but other people swear by them, and, at least at first, you may find that you'd rather use a sling or a carrier than a stroller.
You really don't need too much stuff until they're sitting up, and you probably don't want your house all cluttered up with all sorts of extruded plastic baby gear that you can't use yet!

My child is almost 4 months old. I'll give you a top 10 list in no particular order. Good Luck. The registry is sooo much fun to do. Bring someone who has already had a child! I wouldn't really put clothes on the list (unless they were sleepers) because everyone will buy you an outfit!!!
1) Cradle
2) Diapers
3) Bouncer (popazon something that vibrates and plays music)
4) Pack and Play
5) Stroller with car seat
6) Bumbo
7) Boppee and cover for it
8) Swing
9) Crib
10) High Chair

Right off the top of my head, the two most important things we used were:
1) A Battery powered swing (fisher Price)
For nights when that sweet little baby just doesn't want to go to sleep. Thank God we got this!
Also, these swings usually take several D size batteries, but amazingly enough they use the power very efficiently.
Our daughter spent many a full night sleeping inside her swing - and she turned out awesome!
2) Diaper Receptacle
(Don't get the Diaper Genie it uses expensive proprietary disposal bags)
We've used the 'Baby Trend Diaper Champ' for both of our kids and it works great and I use regular white kitchen bags in it. Also, since it uses kitchen size bags, you can buy the kitchen bags that are pre-deodorized with a scent to help cover up . . . . well, you know . . . odors.
Everything else is just bottles and such.
Oh yeah one more thing we use that's kind of nice to have . . .
3) Wipes Warmer
(not necessarily a necessity, but nice to have)
The only thing a baby hates more than having a dirty diaper, is being cleaned up with freezing cold wipes in the middle of the night. It'll help keep them from completely waking up, so you can get them back into bed and asleep ASAP.
Don't know what brand we have, but I think they do a pretty good job of reviewing the different brands on Amazon.
Hope these pointers helped you, they definitely helped us and Good Luck and Congratulations on your new baby.

When u go to the stores or if u do it on the web they give u a list of things to registry for. U may not need everything that they suggest but at least it gives u an idea. When u registry for the stuff, take in account how much space u have.

Crib, Bassanet (may be mispelled), Sheets for both, a bumber for the crib, baby monitor, stroller, car seat, baby blankets, LOTS of onesies, wipes, baby changer (not really necassary but may be helpful, definatly a diaper genie, high chair, bibs, baby grooming kits, baby album, burp rags, baby books (that can provide helpful hints and ideas). I would not ask for diapers-but rather gift certificates maybe or coupons... you may end up with a ton of diapers that the baby will outgrow before being able to use them all. Safety items a must such as plugs for the outlets for when the baby is older, car mirrors (they have some that you can adjust to see the baby rear-facing or forward facing, mobiles for the crib, baby toys, walkers.
Don't forget, you will need things such as a walker or high chair for when he/she gets bigger so don't just ask for things you will need right away. Every little things help.
I hope I gave some good ideas. Good Luck!

Everyone has given pretty thorough answers...just wanted to say when you go into places like Babies R Us they give you like 3 pages of "essentials." Don't freak out...(like I did...) you can get anything you want on the list, but you don't NEED all of it...you don't need toys in the beginning, so you can hold off on that for a couple of months. Also, I was told to buy TONS of receiving blankets and bibs...if you do any kind of regular laundry, you will not need TONS of anything. And a "changing table" is just a dresser that is labeled "baby furniture" so they can jack up the price. You can get the portable countoured changing pads that you can throw down anywhere. You might want to check out craigslist for all of this stuff...you can get some GREAT deals. Good luck!

instead of repeating what everyone else said...i'll name a few other things...
A PORTRAIT PACKAGE(s)!!!--make a note you would like a port pkg from anywhere...sears, jcpenney, walmart, kiddie kandids--they are expensive and you will want to go a few times.....
a floppy seat (goes inside shopping carts/highchairs etc)
excersaucer
a floor playmat, with the arches and toys that hang down
bath toys and reg toys are expensive so you may a few of those--LITTLE TYKES has a very cool 5 in 1 adj gym
a crib sound soother (aquarium of sorts)
a SASSY brand safe feeder mesh food net thing, so they can chew on food, fruit, veggies, etc in the net but they can't choke, they just get the juice/nutrients--awesome for teething--i used a pacifier keeper loop around the end when we went out to eat so it wouldn't fall on the floor
formula mixer (PRINCE LIONHEART) and 4 divider container if you are using formula SASSY
GOOD STRART form--if using
bottles......DR BROWN'S, if using
tiny diner portable placemat--suctions onto tables at restaurants
maybe a wipe warmer (DEX brand) for a winter baby
DREFT baby detergent--(mine was allergic to everything else)
register for several size diapers (PAMPPERS--swaddlers/cruisers) as they grow....if you don't open box and they outgrow, simply exchange for next size up.
a potty chair
a booster seat (portable--healthy care FISHER-PRICE)
get both an infant seat--or travel systems are great too(CHICCO expensive but the best imo, i've done extensive research) AND also a toddler (ALPHA OMEGA ELITE 5-100#) car seat
saftey gates if your gonna need em
hope this helps...good luck, and congrats!!!!

I don't have brand names for you but I can tell you that half of the things out there for babies you don't really need. I suggest 6-10 body sleeper type outfits,6-10 onesies, lots of receiving blankets, plenty burp clothes,a baby tub,a swing that vibrates, lots of bottles even if you breastfeed because you never know, pacifiers,a crib or bassinet (if you get a bassinet it'll probably last you the first few months then you'll need a crib but bassinets are cheaper but a crib last way longer to accommodate the baby growing),baby wash, diaper rash cream, baby shampoo, baby lotion, lots and lots of diapers,a few toys,a nail file for her nails(nail clippers are risky at clipping there poor little fingers because babies are wiggly and you can use any kind of file just as long as it isn't metal),some sock, lots of hats to keep head warm at night, some mittens (because there hands get cold very easily and make sure they have good elastic at the wrist because most baby mittens out there fall off there hands easily),and a full baby first aid kit(a good brand is little tummies gift sets they come with gas drops, cold medicine, etc. it's a must),rear facing car seat of course, and that's all I can think of right now...I think I covered all the base4s.Good luck!

Diapers will always be number 1. I personally found Luvs to be the best. I also suggest cloth diapers which make great burp cloths...they can be used later on as dust cloths when your baby doesn't need them anymore. Baby wipes are also important, Huggies are really nice and thick. For babies born in winter, sleepers are great. Babies don't need tons of clothes, although everyone just loves buying all the cute outfits. Babies born in summer, onesies are excellent.
Good Luck

Baby nail clippers
crib sheets
endless supply of diapers even the next size bigger is helpful
onesies
baby moniters
don't forget about child proofing stuff for your house because it won't be long and that baby will be getting around
Congrats and good luck with the new baby
