I'm not a Bible-thumper by any means, but there is something I learned at Church that might help answer your question. Your question reminded me of a biblical passage that can open your eyes to the reality of materialism. I found the following text regarding this on a website. Text follows, with link below that. I hope this helps you - it did me:

"Then Jesus said to the disciples, 'If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life. And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul? '" (Matthew 16:24-26, NLT).

"But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31, NIV).

"I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10, NIV ).

Happiness is more about wanting what you have, than having what you want.
You will always want what you don't have. The grass will always seem greener on the other side of the fence. But you only wnat what you don't have, because your imagination tells you that it's better than what you already have.
How would you like it if everybody knew everything you did; every mistake, every "private moment", every blunder? What of everything you did were subject to public scrutiny? People loving you and hating you, who don't really know you at all......
If you are looking for personal validation, why don't you try building it from the inside out? Making accomplishments builds you up. They build you up so much that who cares if anybody else notices? You know what you can do.
As I said before, happiness is more about wanting what you have, than having what you want.

Learning how to be content can really help with a more peaceful life. I'm not saying a person shouldn't find their calling, field or specialty of work but also be thankful for what you do have and seeing how you can do good in this world for others.

Let the chips fall where they may. Work hard towards your goals and beleive "everything happens for a reason" you are where you are meant to be accept it, continue to work hard and enjoy every minute of what is going on in the present. Things will go better, or atleast seem to, if you relax and let them come.

That's what Buddhism is all about. Well, not ALL about, but kind of. Look into Buddhism. Try living in the moment, rather than reaching for the future always.
