You shouldn't be embarassed, but you will be. We all were (and are!) My doctor told me something at my fist pap test that I think describes it perfectly "it's not painfull, just very un-dignified"

I don't think there's any way to avoid the discomfort of taking off your clothes and having a doctor poking around 'down there'. Try not to think about it too much, and just remember the doctor has seen it all before. (also, bring a magazine to read to distract yourself, and leave your socks on - the stirrups are cold!)

I asked why they get you to get undressed behind the curtain when they are going to be looking really closely at your private bits anyway. My doctor explained that it's so the patient and doctor can disassociate what's happening from anything remotely sexual. I had my pap smear done last week. It's vaguely embarrassing, but not painful. If you doctor doesn't let you disrobe in private, then something is wrong, and you should ask for a different doctor.

It's human nature to be a little embarrased. I have a female doctor and it does make things a little more comfortable. During my exams I make it a point to talk, not about what's going on, but just general things. I had the same female doctor for a couple of years and I just saw my new female doctor for the first time last week and during my exam, we talked about what a b***h my old doctor was. I made those few uncomfortable minutes pass by quick.

Most dr.s don't really watch you get undressed, so you don't have to worry about that part. Plus, you also get a hospital gown to wear, so you're mostly covered anyway.
My doctor (a female) is great with not making me feel uncomfortable...she basically walks me through everything as she's doing it so i know what she's looking/testing for.
I'm not going to lie, it hurts me when i go. Apparently there's some new apparatus that scrapes the cervix to check for cervical cancer...basically it's a long stick with a butterfly-like tip and they put it up and scrape the cervix. That's probably the most uncomfortable thing for me....and I also bled quite a bit.
I'm not trying to scare you, just giving you a little heads up. But hey, i'll take going through all of this once a year just to ensure that my health is in check.
Don't sweat it...we're women, if we can get through child birth we can get through this ;)
Good luck!

It's normal to be embarrassed at first. Just relax. They are doing their job, nothing more. I've had enough paps that I even chat with the doctor while they are examining me.

yes and no.i'm sorry but i didn't see that you only wanted ladies to reply. this is a touchy subject. no pun intended. some of these girls will only answer for points. being a man who has had the time to actually watch this procedure. the doctor is trained to look past any defects and perfections regardless of his\her eyes. don't be embarrassed to do the thing that will ultimately result in the welfare of your body.some things you have to let loose. just pretend you are modeling for 3million dollars or showing the world that there is more to life then having clothes. surely your body is a temple; so just think that your contractors are coming to look it over to make some repairs or ensure that there are no reasons for repair. it's about your health baby. honest answer only trying to help

you won't disrobe in front of the doctor. he/she leaves the room and gives you privacy to do so. if you're having a pap-smear then you just strip from the waist down, lie on the table and use the blanket to cover. then bottoms up!
