When I think of customer service, I think of being as helpful as possible to customers. This means answering their questions as quickly as possible and as much to their satisfaction as possible. Try to keep from saying "no" as much as possible. Instead of saying no, try to offer an alternative - something that they can benefit from. EXAMPLE - in retail, you might have a customer that wasn't pleased with the quality of a product or the time that it took for the product to ship - apologize for the inconvenience. Maybe to ensure that they will be a returning customer or at least try to get them to come back for more, offer them free shipping or a small discount on their next purchase. Also, it helps to build bridges by being as friendly as possible and never take things personal. People like things done quickly and efficiently. When you start slacking a little on your end, it will show up on their end. Here are the three things that I believe matter the most in customer service - friendly and cheerful demeanor, quick and consistent response time, and be thorough in the whatever kind of service you provide. It also helps to go a little out your way to please them. :)

Besides the basic ideas of providing a good shopping experience, you should think of providing more then your customers expected.

Going above and beyond for a customer when they don't ask is the best way to build a bridge.

If you are starting a new business or service, it pays to advertise in the local papers! Conjure up ads that tend to show what you do, business hours, rates, etc.
When talking to present customers, be friendly, courteous, use good grammar, be a good listener, be prompt with your service, have the job done when promised, or call if not possible due to undelivered orders, or unavailabilty of parts, product, etc.
Above all--SMILE! Nobody likes to do business with a "Grouch"!
