Nesmith (releasing pre-Monkees singles as "Michael Blessing") and Tork (part of the folk music scene in Greenwich Village) were both already professional musicians.

The casting call was for musicians so I would assume that they all had some sort of musical background. The band was "created" so that there could be a TV show about it. It was cast like any other TV show (ie casting call, call backs etc.) and roles were asigned. Everyone kind of thought they were a joke at the time. In retrospect it appears it wasn't the worst way to form a band. Other bands have been formed in similar ways (although I think only the Monkees were formed for that reason) and done fairly well. After the Monkees bands knew not to admit they were formed in this "non-artistic" manner. ;-) peace and love baby! ;)

Allow me to cut-and-paste from Wikipedia...

"ll four Monkees were trained in both improvisational comedy and stage presence as a group before the pilot episode was filmed, so that they could look and act like a cohesive band even though it was only their voices being used on the initial recordings. Each was given a different personality to portray: Dolenz the funny one, Nesmith the smart and serious one, Tork the naive one, and Jones the cute one. Their characters were loosely based on their real selves, with the exception of Tork, who was actually a quiet intellectual. Choosing someone to play the drummer proved tough; Nesmith and Tork did not want to give up their guitars, and the five-foot, three-inch Jones nearly vanished behind the drums. Dolenz ultimately took the job, and began drum lessons. (According to Rhino Records liner notes, by the time of their first solo tour, Dolenz had had only a crash-course in drums, and to this day, he still sets up his drum kit as if he were left-handed, as his drum teacher had been, when he is actually right-handed.)"

Check it out. Micky Dolenz sang most of their songs as lead some lead as well. Mike Nesmith, did sing some and he did play guitar. Micky also did play drums, but not professionally. He was originally an actor as a child. Most of their music was written by Carole King, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. They did have back up musicians on their records. Glen Campbell was one of the guitar back ups. No Milli Vanelli stuff here. They did the singing for real!!!!
