I am not good at devoting myself to a bunch of things. I either want to be a painter, a rock star or a writer. I am currently spreading my time out among the three. Which do you think would be the best to pursue? (I asked this in philosophy because I wanted a thoughtful, non-biased answer from a philosopher or someone wise at least)

Everytime I'm writing, I feel like I should be drawing or playing guitar. Every time I'm drawing, I feel like I should be playing guitar or writing. And everytime I play guitar I feel like I should be writing or drawing. Then I have to try to make time to have a social life, but then when I do that, I feel like I should be doing one of the other three things.

Ultimately, it is not "what you are" or "what you do" that will define your success. It is "how you do it".

You will find your purpose and your strength when you see that you are in a relationship with all other living things; and that you are powerful, purposeful, and peaceful when you serve in some capacity.

How's that for a philosophic answer?

The mysteries of the universe are only mysteries to a noisy mind. Silence is the veil of God.

Hmm. I don't think you should devote yourself to writing just yet, if you have a passion for music and painting. Although there are some very young writers out there, it's something most people come to later in life, when they've acquired sufficient life experience and also read enough of other people's writing to know how it's done.

A rock star, on the other hand, is a much easier thing to be when you're young. Think of your situation twenty years down the line - you'll still be free to be a writer, and probably have lots to write about if the last two decades were spent as a musician.

As for the painting thing, that's the hardest to pursue of the three without some serious God-given talent - a bad musician or a bad writer can usually become good (in some sense) with practice but a bad painter usually stays that way, no matter how hard he/she tries. Get some honest opinions about your work from people you trust and see what they think.

What you "should" do is up to you. The reason you start anything should be because you feel it calling you and it will give you some sort of fulfillment. But when you're emerged in an activity, just concentrate on it so you don't miss all the good things about that present experience. Which thing should you do most out of the three?? The thing that gives you the most fulfillment.

Spend a little while , say a day, two days, a week, as per your ability, convenience, totally and exclusively, to each of these three things you like....
While at it, observe, which of it makes the 'you' completely dissolved in it MORE ! The one that makes you totally forget the individuality is the thing you will enjoy doing better ! Commercial viability, recognition, etc (such material aspects) has to be a situation based decision, and choice of individual person according to how important it is in relation to joy of working !

Dear wonder.... It is wonderful to hear that there are people like you out there who wishes to pursue his/her dream. I wish you the best of luck yet I wonder. What is this "best" that you seek? It is the outcome, unexpected journey with a twist or something else. Very often, oneself might quote "this is the best". Every choices we make bring forth results. Now, I would like to YOU. How many choices did you make? All(?) None(?) what was the best? My thoughts on your question would be "Do not confine yourself with your thoughts". Your quest for this best______ might be out there out. However, pursue them all. See where the choices (more than one) lead you. You might find IT or may not. Surely, I can tell you this..... When you are far into your journey, look back and you will see that.............. "The best choice for me was___________" (you'll be able to answer this question)...

Devote yourself to those things that give you fulfillment - if you're multidimensional, then perhaps all 3 options you listed satisfy that "fulfillment" idea.

Remember, you don't necessarily have to be the *best* at any of the three, but I think it's more fulfilling to try to do well at them than to go through the motions.
