It never made any sense to me. Yes many sci fi fans like myself are really into shows, talk about them a lot, collect things, etc. Yet.. SOOO many sports fans are SO MUCH MORE INSANE. They know every detail about every player, detailed stats that don't me anything, can talk about seeming nothing for hours as long as it involves sports, and their entire schedule revolves around when games are played. Yet... even the casual sci fi fan gets such a worse rap then the INSANE sports fan. Can someone explain this inequity to me?

I don't know. A lot of the HARDCORE sports fans are big fat guys who drink a lot and don't acctually play any sports themselves.. yet it is still considered better.

And at least Fiction has a plot, characters, and something interesting to talk about. All that happens in sports is a ball goes back and fouth and stats are spouted.

I think the answer lies in the perceived macho of sports. Even sports like curling (which any six year old can physically do) are considered more 'manly' than science. Though I don't agree with this overall viewpoint, it still seems to be the one the majority has agreed on. It's funny too, I like hockey, but can't talk to anyone else about it because most think hockey is one of those really aggressive sports. Why do I like it? For the same reason I'd sit for hours watching ice skaters -it's beautiful. Can I get any other hockey fan on this subject for long? No, but most of them wouldn't last two minutes into a discussion of the best Next Gen episodes.
Something else I just thought of, those of us Sci Fi fans -and science fans in general- get our 'feel good' endorphins from self study just as readily as we do from gathering with like minded fanatics. We don't have a need to go out and be crazy with several thousand other people to have our brain endorphins stimulated. So, for the science fan, a day in the library is much more satisfying than a day in the top bleachers packed like sardines. Can the sports fan comprehend this? No. This is why the multitude think sports are better, they are not ready to know the joy of a day of self directed study.
This leads many more un-cultured neanderthals to look down their noses at something they don't understand. So, we put up with being thought of as inferior or crazy. Obviously to the knowledgeable, we are not nearly as insane as those sports fanatics, but why worry about the opinion of those who can't comprehend. Trust me, I lived with one of those sports fanatics and I completely agree -and could give empirical data- on the fact that sports fans are by far more obsessed than the average sci fi fan. They'd never admit to it and will probably continue to call us crazy, at least as long as the majority is still sports minded. From the fools point of view, everyone is crazier than he and the dancers appear insane to those who can not hear the music.

I like Sci Fi and sports. I probably like Sci Fi more, but I'm also more likely to see Sci Fi fans as dorks. Not all or even the majority. But hardcore Sci Fi fans are also antisocial...at least thats the stereotype and sometimes its true. Some Sci Fi people are also into computer science and some are rather dark industrial music types. There is nothing more antisocial and unlikable than an industrial music fan.

Its all about machismo. Science fiction is just that, FICTION. Sports are more real to those sports fans because it happens for everyone to see. The 'nerd/geek' stereotype has always been an easy target to pick on because it seems so way out of place, exactly like science fiction.

I think it's cos sc-fi is classed as cult tv & as such it doesn't get as big an audience as soaps etc. or as you say sports.Minoritiy tv will always get slagged off. I watched The X-Files in it's heyday & was called a nerd for it. I watch Dr. Who - it gets 8 million viewers - and i still get teased. You can't win!

usually you aren't any more prepared on 2 communities interior an same branch yet i will see cheering for Ottawa at the same time as they don't play Boston, at the same time as the Canadian communities are good it really is better outfitted to the NHL so I often times do this too.

Sports fans go out and play sports and meet girls and so on.
