Live traps if you don't want to kill them. If you want them dead them I would suggest a rat trap.

It is best not to use poison so the rats don't die a long death. So it is good that you decided not to use poison. The other type of trap you don't want to use is a glue trap. They are one of the cruelest ways to catch an animal. They also can catch other animals such as birds. So please don't use them. If you want to use a live trap you could trap them in it and let them go in a field. If you do want them dead a rat trap would work and it is a quick death. The way I chose to deal with the wild rats was adopt a cat. The cat never caught one but she did keep them away. The rats knew she was there and decided to leave and find a safer place to live. Good Luck.

Get a Jack Russell Terrier, Parsons Terrier (shorter legs), or a Rat Terrier. They are death to rodents and very efficient rat killers. Don't use glue traps. They work well but are really cruel. Any time I had to use them the poor rat or mouse would always get its head stuck and lie there in misery. If you want to simply catch the rats and release them somewhere use live traps. Any snap trap strong enough to kill a rat can seriously injure a small dog or cat so be careful if you use those.

Don't get a cat, they do more damage to native wildlife. Unless you permanantly keep them indoors or in a cat run

You may use mouse traps which kills them. Cats or snakes will do fine. Although snakes should be kept in a cage and only releashed outside to "kill and eat" the rats at least once a month. Depending on their size. Although, I think you should keep a cat handy and a ball python about 5 years old, inside your house with a couple of mouse traps in corners. If one is triggered then take it and feed it to your snake.

Snap traps work well. Sometimes you have to anchor them. Glue traps work for the babies, but the big ones can sometimes work free. To kill a glue-trapped mouse or rat, just put it in a bucket with couple of inches of water in it. Cleans the trap, too. 10 minutes is plenty.
Or you could hire a local kid with a BB gun.

Mix equal parts of dry cement and flour.Set out with a container of water. Rats will go for the flour mix and will drink water when dry.Rats cannot vomit and the cement will harden in their stomachs. I am serious.
