Stay away from pharms. Yes, I've mixed valerian and melatonin. I've never found the melatonin to be effective, so I quit it. I still take valerian before bed (insomnia). During the day, I will take one 5-HTP in the morning and one in the evening. Another thing you can do is learn how to deal with stress. Exercise and healthy diet will go a long way toward helping you feel better. Your fear of addiction is a very healthy one.

I've tried mixing them for sleep but I find that it's basically the same thing if I just take melatonin on it's own.
I would suggest trying valerian for anxiety during the day and then using melatonin at night.
Oh yeah and good job on trying to get yourself off synthetics !

valerian root may calm you down but melatonin is for sleep and it is a hormone and it really should be taken at night for sleep when it's dark. You might try St. Johns Wort if you have no thyroid problem for anxiety.

You've had some good advice from the respondents so far, Dear... there is NOTHING that will ever suffice - at least at this juncture of our development & technological prowess - for A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP! So keep takin that Melatonin. The valerain can't hurt if taken in appropriate amounts, but "stress management" is grossly under-rated and under-utilized, so try these techniques & find out as mush as you can about them>>> 1) BREATHING! When you're feeling the tension mounting, take 3 deep breathes and close your eyes for fifteen seconds (if possible) to clear your head... then resume what is essntial by acting as though your waitress job was an ongoing "dance" of "triage." 2) Keep the disappointments, or problems "in perspective:" all the "storms" of your job are just that... Storms ARE temporary even though they may SEEM to be "non-stop" and whatever you manage to get through, only better prepares you for the "next set of storms;" your coping skills ARE "ever-improving..." This is a good and truthful affirmation in which you can take some comfort. During the perods of managed "lunacy," try to take your head-space to your "happy places..." This works if you discipline your mind to work in this fashion. 3)Know when to "REGROUP:" There is no shame in taking yourself out of a particularly volitile or potentially abusive situation, eg, if a client were coming on to you or sexually harassing you, you are within your rights to tell him it is inappropriate and that you'll give them another chance to order in five minutes after he/she has reconsidered the behavior & is choosing to not "go there." Get busy doing other things until you feel prepared to deal with a situation... not before. 4) Don't expect perfection from yourself: You're HUMAN. While "giving your best" is admirable and desirable, you desearve the dignity of being imperfect and still valued... in other words, don't sweat the small stuff. And lastly, 5) learn to bow to absurdity: life is a profound & wonderful adventure... it also often spotted with sojourns into the innane & ludicrous... over which, you've little or NO appreciable control... consider these times as transcendent parts of the dance... laugh with (or at) the derranged & farsical & illogical... there is no way exert any immediate control on it, so learn to laugh (a lot!). In fact, when things get terse & strained.... recall your favorite scenes of your favorite comedies... the ones that really tickled your "funny bone." Laughing is the most benefitial form of breathing known to medicine! Believe it!
Also. a long hot bath after the end of your day, along with that melatonin, will assure that you get that good niight's sleep! If your back aches, try rocking on it while holding your legs up.... makes for a good impromptu message.
One more piece of advice... while a series of hurtles may confront you, take one at a time in your mind... I'm going back to the concept of "the here & now." An existential awareness can be your saving grace when things are really crowding in on your... as long as your efforts are genuine and altruistic in the human environment, you can hold you head up high and make no apologies for the most-often-trite "oversights." Learn to know that you are indeed more than the sum of your existence... that includes your job! Hope this helps...
