if you already own the dvd then that is fine. but why would you want to copy it?

if you are say renting it from Blockbuster and copy it, that is illegal. save yourself the infringement lawsuit money and buy the dvd.

No, most DVD,s you buy give you a licence to own 1 copy of that DVD content.
Some will allow you to make 1 copy but most will only licence you to own 1 copy and only for personal use.
If you were to use any DVD, original or copy in any public showing other than in your own home you would be liable for copyright infringement and a possible large fine.
Copy and distribute any DVD at your own risk.
for your information I normally make a copy of any DVD I buy but I keep them in an archive in case anything happens to the original, I do not sell them or lend them out.
It is against federal law to copy and distribute any DVD, it says so on the startup screen of almost every DVD.

I copy DVD's for my kids and keep the originals so they won't get scratched. Then if the copies get scratched, I have the originals to copy them again. In my opinion, you bought that DVD to do with what you want and as long as you don't sell it there is nothing wrong with it.

No you can not copy a dvd under any circumstances... Well unless the copyright as run out and it is listed as being in the public domain and then all bets are off and you may do with it as you please. If you have a massive collection of movies you taped off the TV when you die you can not even give them away they are be destroyed. It's a crazy world so take you pick...

I believe it's okay to copy movies you own for your own use like to keep the original and play the copy. Good if you have kids who are hard on DVDs.

You can get into a lot of trouble for doing that. Once you copy a DVD, by law, you must sell it.

Legally you can make an "archival copy" for your own personal use. You run into trouble with the law when you make profit by copying intellectual property or providing copies to anyone other than yourself. Copying intellectual property for gain is called piracy.

yes... its fine only for personal use. When I buy a movie, I copy it and just use the copy on my laptop when I'm out and about.

It saves your original from getting damaged.
