I have a hot water faucet in my bathroom. Whenever you turn the sink faucet on halfway, it makes a loud panging noise. It's like someone is banging on the pipes. I thought I heard somewhere that it's because there's air in the pipes. Is that true? How can I solve this problem?

My normal method of fixing something at home typically involves a five-step process.

1.) I pet whatever it is and tell it that it's pretty.

When this does not work I move on to Step #2.

2.) I repeatedly scream obscenities at it hoping that this will intimidate the thing thereby convincing it to work properly.

When this too, fails to achieve the result I was looking for I move on to Step #3.

3.) I violently and relentlessly beat the **** out of it with a hammer.

4.) I make a phonecall to whoever earns a living fixing such things. Should Step #3 turn out to have made the problem worse I simply replace the object.

5.) I give the replacement dirty looks and threaten it by showing it the thing it replaced. I very clearly explain the failure of it's predecessor and make sure that it understands that it will meet the same fate should it refuse to cooperate.

Trust me, this is fool-proof.

Could be a couple of things. Air in the pipes is a possibility. To rectify this, turn on all your faucets and let all the air out. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes.
Another problem could be a loose screw that holds the faucet washer to the faucet stem. Easy enough to repair. Shut your valve to the faucet off or close the main valve if there isn't a valve before the faucet. Remove the faucet, replace the washer (round black rubber thing which can be of several shapes) and tighten the screw. The faucet stem may possibly be corroded to the extent it may need replacing.

The noise maybe caused by your angle stop not being turned on enough and there is only a small passage for water. Try to turn it open a little bit more if not all the way. If it does not improve, then the problem could be in your faucet, there could be a build up in the cartridge. You can open and try checking the cartridge if you know how to, but if the faucet is old, i suggest that you replace it.
Good luck.
