It tells us how we should dress, how we should act, how we should resolve our problems. We religiously watch our shows once a week, and the characters and their lives are more real to us than any myth or biblical tale ever was. It provides us with a sense of comfort and knowledge of another world which might not exist, but could and is real to us. It fills that void in our lives that used to be filled by religion, and reaches out to everybody--most of whom embrace it willingly. Even the most logical of athiests suspends their disbelief when watching dragons attack on the sci-fi channel, and the most devout of christians watch their religion channels with as much fervor. Television brings all faiths together, and keeps us all connected by that mesmeric glare of a cathode ray tube. The televisionists comprise the largest congregation in the whole world, and no other religion can compare to its numbers

Totally agree, although personally I loathe the damn thing and watch very little, no soaps for me I'm afraid. Most of my friends and colleagues look at me as if I were some terrible sinner if I say I don't watch Corrie, Eastenders, Lost, Desperate Housewives etc. I say more fool them, I'm sure my life is no less richer for the lack of this particular religion.

Oh ! You seem to have HIT THE MARK !
It did not occur earlier, to me at least !
It is just that religions too seem to be doing INADVERTENTLY what a TV is doing today. You seem to have given a very simple but excellent clue to "literally what is wrong with the way religions are taught, preached, and spread ..... today !"
And also, interestingly, even the Religion channels in the TV are not that popular ! TV has emerged to be a very strong addiction, and the program producers, do have the power to control the trend of the minds of the viewers !
Once upon a time, the Religious preachers used to have a good influence on life style of the common people, and for good, .... not so now !
So, the converse of what you say also seems to be true !
The religions (the method of teaching it) have tried to replicate the purposes of TV channels, and due to lack of similar contents, entertainment value, failed to get quality support !

Clannad had a piece in a song, about television.
NOTHING ON THE INSIDE, NOTHING ON THE OUTSIDE, ALL OF LIFE'S A FANTASY. It's a diversion, and leaves you no real quite time to think about how to make your own life better. Nothing could be more true. I know of people who think more about who, what when and where of some fantasy "reality" show than they do of their children and spouse. It isn't real! Relaxing is one thing, but to take all that crap seriously is a fools game. The goal of adverts is to make you feel inferior unless you own all the junk they want to sell you. It is ALL ABOUT SELLING YOU SOMETHING AND KEEPING YOU IN DEBT TO THE CREDIT CARD COMPANIES, AT THEIR INTEREST RATES. It's control, war, coercion without ever firing a shot. And the mindless masses, (with exceptions) are too stupid to see it.

I thought that religion involved faith. I don't see exactly how televsion brings all faiths together, though I can see your reasoning. Faith and religion surely must involve a belief in higher power. Television has power, certainly but not the kind of higher power that can humble people ot truely change lives. It is merely a distraction because it is far easier to concern ourselves with nonsense and other people's lives and problems, than to concern ourselves with our own.

Television does all the things you have mentioned but to call it a Religion is inaccurate(look up the meaning). It is more "influence".
