I've lived all over the United States and in Japan - the San Francisco Bay Area (San Francisco, the peninsula and the East Bay) is the most beautiful place I've ever lived. Rent and houses on the market are both very expensive and many people live an hour or two away just to afford housing.

If you can hang with the money thing, it is well worth it.

There is no 'best place' to live. Your personality and view of life determines where you should live and you have given no details, leaving us blind. Those who list places are just telling you where they like, which is not a useful answer.

Set down and make a list of things that are important to you. Examples: what sort of recreation do you want, hunting or surfing or?

What climate are you willing to tolerate?

What will be your career? If you will be a space scientist, your choices are limited.

Do you want a large city, or small town environment?

What sort of personality do you want in people? Most people from the Midwest, for example, find East Coast people to be very angry and cold. I'm not saying that's true, I am saying that's how Midwesterners view them.

We always lived in Iowa. My daughter suffers from the cold, so she moved to the border, ten miles from the Rio Grande, she was told it never snows. After 12 years here, it snowed, the first time in history. She threatened to move to Panama...

I hate the Valley. It is too hot, and most people speak Spanish. I actually prefer Mexico itself.

so, it is not easy to decide where to live. In many cases, you will simply go where you can find a good job -- if you can find a job, which for many men is not possible due to absolute discrimination.

If you are a woman, and hope to marry some day, you will need to live where men can get jobs, or you will be unable to find a husband with a jjob.

Cali's awesome : anywhere from Fresno on up. Avoid SoCal....it's highly plastic. The people are very disconnected from reality there.

Washington state's nice, as well as is Oregon (especially Portland.)

Texas is BOOMING exponentially when it comes to economy and general overall growth in industry and population.

NYC is unique, it's highly expensive, but those people hustle like you wouldn't believe. If you can find a decent place in Brooklyn for example, it's a great place to live.

St. Louis, MI is a nice little city, as is Pittsburgh, PA (though that truly is the ONLY part of PA I would reccomend....the rest of the commonwealth is a joke.)

Fairfax or Arlington County, Virginia are also gorgeous places to live....though it's expensive, and you'll have to deal with the "95's" everyday (interstates i95, 395, 495, 695, etc.....they're a headache. On the positive though, you'll have direct access to Washington D.C. if you so desired as well as quick driving routes to VA Beach, Outer Banks or Hatteras, NC etc...

Utah would be a great place, not just because it's a beautiful place but the cost of living is cheaper and utilities are cheaper. My brother lives in Utah and he loves it there. Another plus is you will be close enough to visit many National Parks "Zion and the Grand Canyon to name a few. I've been to both and they are awesome and oh yes St.George Utah is only 2 hours from Las Vegas! Then there is also Ohio my home I love it here and I love the four seasons there are alot of great things about Ohio, ya gotta live here to appreciate all the many attributes Cedar Point Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the huge amish community here in Ohio Cleveland Indians The Browns Ohio is just a great place to live.

Berkeley, California.
College town, highly literate citizens, great mix of cultures (which translates to the most interesting shops and restaurants you can ever find), highly socially conscious people (good for the environment and health) and beautiful weather that doesn't get too cold or too hot.

Close vicinity to San Francisco and Napa Valley (Wine Country)
