Everytime my cycle comes around I suffer through violent cramps, nausea, loose bowels, fatigue, and vomiting. (Just about every symptom with primary dysmenorrhea).
Common cures are oral contraceptives and NSAIDs. Unfortunately, vomiting is guaranteed and if I attempt to take anything orally; medicine, food, even water - It will eventually come back up.
I refuse to take oral contraceptives to fix this problem, I would rather not take NSAIDs.
So I am searching online for possible cures or suggestions or even places to turn to find voices to communicate to with this problem.
Ideally, I'd like to hear perhaps diet suggestions and natural remedies.
I am a very active person, so increasing my physical activity hasn't been successful and when the symptoms come on, I am not able to move much, with a high sensitivity to smells and sounds and I simply try to sleep.
Any help or suggestions - I thank you all much.

My poor girl, I understand completely. Would you be able to see a herbalist? If one is not available where you live or if you can't afford it, here is my 'cure'.

For the nausea/vomiting-ginger works wonders. You can make your own ginger tea very cheaply. Buy a fresh ginger root, peel and finely slice a small piece of the root, 1/2 inch. Put the little pieces in a cup, (not the peel) pour boiling water over them, steep 5 minutes. Add honey if you like. You can eat a small piece or the boiled ginger if you like, but this is not necessary. Start drinking this tea once or twice a day a couple days prior to your period. Drink as needed during your period.

For the cramping and pain-try a mixture of 'black haw' and 'motherwort'. Use the tincture {liquid form with a tiny bit of alcohol}. A tincture is absorbed by your body VERY quickly. The amount you need to take varies so check the dosage. Take this mix in the morning, following ginger tea. Again in the afternoon. Finally take this at bedtime, but also add a dose of 'valerian' extract to the bedtime mix. This cure is to be started a day or two prior to your period or when severe PMS symptoms begin.

Another tincture good for both nausea and diarrhea is 'black horehound extract'.

Again, these liquids/tinctures are absorbed very quickly. If you can keep them down for 20 minutes, your body has absorbed most of them.

Is there a good pharmacy or natural foods store near you? If not, I get my herbals at www.gaiagarden.com

Your symptoms sound extreme, have you been to see a doctor (gyno) yet? If not, I would, just to be safe.

Good luck and I hope you discover something to help you.

I've been in EXACTLY the same situation as you. I had every symptom you mention, plus fainting (because the pain was so unbearable). I'll tell you what happened with me and maybe you can get some help from my experience. On several occasions, I had to be taken to a hospital emergency room when I was having the symptoms, and they'd give me an injection of Demerol. I felt like that was a miracle cure because the pain always went away almost immediately after the injection - but Demerol is a narcotic so it can be addictive. Luckily, I found a gynecologist who decided to try to find the cause of my severe pain rather than just trying to mask it when it occurred. I had to go through a minor surgical procedure (laparoscopy) to find out that I had endometriosis. After the surgery, I was given the choice of being treated with either oral contraceptives or injections of Depo-Provera every three months. I chose the Depo-Provera injections. There are possible side effects to the injections (as there are with any medications), but in my case, I feel that the side effects are really minor compared to what I was going through with my periods every month.

As for natural or nutritional remedies, I don't know of anything that works for SEVERE pain. I had heard at one time that if you take an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) starting a couple days before you get your period, you won't experience the symptoms -- but I tried it a couple times and it didn't work at all.

I'm a really strong believer in natural remedies and trying to avoid medications as much as possible, but I also believe that when you're having severe symptoms, you should do whatever it takes to get rid of those symptoms -- and sometimes that actually means the use of medications.

I wish you the best of luck!

Your age? If you are 40 ^ it might be you have the great Peri menopausal syndrome which lasts for years. I hate to tell you this but I suffered terribly from it. I always said I had 2 wks out of each month where I was human. Then I went from that to menopause which is no period but hot flashes and headaches, migraines, insomnia and everything else. I don't have a clue but I'd love to know. all Dr.'s treat me like I'm mental and I think I really am. Sorry I can't help you sister. Good luck though.

Try a sitz bath; a type of bath in which only the hips and buttocks are soaked in water . A sitz bath is a plastic tub that fits over the toilet and can be filled with water. It can be purchased at many drug store chains for about $10. You may also find them at pharmacies or medical supply stores. This can also be done by sitting in a bathtub filled with a few inches of water. Fill the sitz bath with warm water(no bubble bath or oil). Remember that the water temperature will feel cooler to your hands than it will to the rest of the body. Sit in the warm water twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes. On rare occasions, you can feel dizzy, so be careful standing up.
