Go to Start_All Programs_Accessories_System Tools_Disk Cleanup. This should be a start to cleaning out unnecessary and temporary files on your computer. You can also go to Start _Control Panel_Add/Remove Software_and choose what you need and dont. It will show you what you use the most and hardly at all. Go into Windows Components and do the same. Hope this helps.

I am presently teaching myself how to disable startup programs from the System Configuration Utility (what fancy language, huh), and it is quite an adventure. So far, I have managed to disable four entire programs, and already the computer is beginning to purr like a Rolls Royce (where all you hear is the ticking of the clock). You go to "Start" on your desktop. then to "Run," and type in "msconfig" and click "go" or "OK." When the little grey box comes up, click the "Startup" tab, and then click "OK." What then comes up will be a list of abbreviations of startup programs that run every time you turn on your computer. Then you have to research those abbreviations by typing them into "web search" one by one, to understand what they really mean, and then you can decide which ones to disable carefully, and if you are lucky, you can lose a lot of extra baggage and your computer will run much faster. If you choose to disable any of those startup programs, you have to restart your computer after you do so, so it will "take." Run this all by someone who knows computers before you try any of it. I am new to this. Make sure you also read all the other answers here. You will soon find ways to make your computer much better and easier to use.

For tha "novice" IT user, i would reconmend the "Ace utilities"

it'll scan ur hard-drive / registry, an alert you of things that don't make sense, it lets u alter start-up progs, even ones that donts show ups in msconfig, it'll wipe loadsa stuff 4rm ie temp files, cookies, securley clear free space ( so previous info is unrecoverable)

search 4 it in yahoo, d/l tha demo then goto: http://astalavista.box.sk/

to obtain a crack tu turn it into full product =0)
