The air filter usually goes on the inlet side of the airstream. Find where your cold air return inlet is located (on either side of the furnace. Or on the bottom if the plenum is on top of the furnace, or on the top if the plenum is on the bottom.)
The plenum is a large insulated metal box on the furnace from where all the insulated ductwork begins, and then goes to the various rooms in your house. On an upflow furnace, the plenum is on top of the furnace. On a downflow furnace, it's below the furnace.
Most furnaces also allow for side-mounted inlets, so the filter could be hiding there.

Locate the main unit and trace where the ducts go. Likely, the largest duct goes to the filter.
Ours is in the middle of the house above the closet door. Go in each room, listen and feel for the flow of the air. Use a candle or a sheet of paper held up to feel the flow if you have to.
Failing that, call the furnace installer or the home inspector, or the realtor who sold you the house.

Look for a slightly smaller closet door, there should be a grill for the intake before it goes into the unit. There might be 2 screws holding this to the wall. behind there sh old be the filter. Pull it out and get the correct size off of the filter itself. Sometimes there is just a grill (appox. 24inches x 10 inches tall) like in a hallway or some where in the center of the house.

this was just asked a few days ago! filters are 99% time right inside the area where the duct attaches to the furnace, if you have a HOT air furnace... and if you dont are you referrring to an oil filter? which would be 99% time where the oil feeds from the tank

It is usually located right where the furnace meets the ducts that take air through your house. (And one side of the filter should be visible without having to open anything.)

It's usually on the intake side of the furnace. It might also be on the cold air intake grates located throughout the house.

Check your owners manual or search for the make and model of your furnace on Yahoo or Goggle.
You can try calling the manufacturing company.
