What is that black stuff that athletes put under their eyes? What is it supposed to do? Does it work?

it's called "eye black" and its supposed to keep the glare of the sun out of your eyes. it does work.

As said, it's eyeblack. Eyeblack absorbs the light from your eyes. As you can imagine, recieving a ball while staring into a light would be pretty hard, but with eye black, it helps maintain eyesight. If you remember in your science classes, black is rough and will absorb light whereas white will reflect. That's bascially what it does and it does it quite well.

After a few games, both professional and amature, the best people on the team tend to get black eyes. The black eyes are a sign to the coach that you are doing your job. Eye Black was developed by some wimp who wanted to be looked on kindly by his father the coach.
