Copernicus thought up Heliocentric theory, the theory that the universe's center is the sun (or that our solar system's center, at least, is the sun, which is true!).

Ptolemy thought up geocentric theory, the theory that the unverse's center is the Earth.

Copernicus's theory went against the Church, and he and Galileo got in a lot of trouble because of it. This was all during the Scientific Revolution (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_revolution for more about that!) in 1543.
