Just about every major fertilizer company (Scotts, Greenview, MiracleGrow, etc) make Fall Fertilizers. These are fertilizers especially formulated to strengthen the plant and root system for the upcoming winter. It considered by most turf experts to be the most important fertilization of the year. In fact, most say if you're only going to fertilize once a year do it in the fall. Go to one of the big box stores or your favorite L&G Center and they will fix you up with a good fall fertilizer.

If your lawn has a bunch of weeds, Scotts is the only one I know of that has a fall weed&feed. It's called Scotts Winterizer Plus 2 or in a L&G you can get Super Winterizer Plus 2. If weed are under control just get a fall fert. and put it down now.

I assume you live in a northern climate where you have snow.
In the Fall I keep mowing the lawn as long as it keeps growing. I apply a low number fertilizer ( 5-10-10 ) to promote root growth. The middle number denotes phosphorous which makes for healthy roots. I also apply peletized lime to maintain the soil pH level [ about 20 kg (45 lb) per 1000 square feet ]
If you have a weed problem, use a Weed & Feed type fertilizer.
I also recommend a mulching blade in your lawn mower. I use one all year round to mulch the grass and leaves up really fine and deposit them back on the lawn. That way , you don't have to rake or bag and all the nutrients are 'recycled'.
Also pray for a nice moderate snow cover. That's what we call 'poor man's fertilizer' around here and it's true.
I live in Nova Scotia , Canada, and our winters can be quite mild or quite cold so our lawns have to be prepared for anything.
My advice is from years of experience and has worked well for me.
Good luck !

you should use a preemergence in the early fall and scotts is one of the best brands around for fertilizer. The preemergence will help prevent weeds in the spring.

Spread compost about 1/2" thick. If you get rain (which we don't) great, but if not water it in (a regular watering).
