I got my ears pierced for the first time ever. Do I really have to keep cleaning them 3 times a day? Is it okay to use alcohol instead of the ear care antiseptic?

Okay, the other answers here were all so terrible I had to tell you the proper way to take care of a fresh piercing.

soak your piercing in saline solution (pick up some sea salt at the grocery store mix 1 tsb to 8oz of warm water). Do this twice a day. Do not rotate the jewelry, you will just drag all those crusty bits in to the fresh hole which will hurt like hell, and you risk draging outside bacteria into the piercing as well. do not touch the piercing any more than is absolutely nesicary, and only with freshly washed hands.

Rubbing alcohol and peroxide are horrible for piercings, they will dry it out and prolong healing.

Basically, follow the LITHA method: Leave it the hell alone. (other than your sea salt soaks)

The ear care stuff they gave you is better. It won't sting, it just feels cool. Also, DON'T TOUCH your piercing, or the area around it. Keep your hair away from it, too. If you got it pierced with a gun instead of a needle, it's more likely to get infected, and touching it is not going to help that any. You have a ton of dirt on your fingers and dirt gathers in your hair, so always keep the piercing away!

You don't have to clean them three times a day. Twice a day is probably enough (once when you wake up, once before bed). As you put the ear care stuff on using a cotton ball, rotate the earring. It sounds nasty, but if any crusty stuff is building up on the earring, if you rotate it and clean it at the same time, the crust will go away.

And one last thing...no matter HOW tempted you are to take it out, DON'T! DON'T TAKE OUT YOUR EARRING for at least a few months! The hole will immediately begin to close up and even if you take it out for a few minutes, you'll have a hell of a time putting it back in. You might end up with a closed hole, or you could sit there for several agonizing minutes trying to force your stud back in, which will more than likely result in an infection. So don't do it =)

When I got my ears pierced I cleaned them about 2-3 times a day and they didn't get infected. You can use alcohol but it stings more and is harsher then the ear care antiseptic.

I would use whatever the people who pierced it gave you, be sure to clean them the 3 times a day and be sure to turn them so that they will not get stuck in that one place.

Rubbing Alcohol, Peroxide or the cleaning solution they give you are all good. Just clean them when you get up and when you go bed and you will be fine
