Duct tape was originally called Duck Tape. It was developed during WWII to seal ammo boxes to keep moisture out of the bullets. It shed water very well and was easy to remove to open the boxes. Because of it's water shed characteristics it was called Duck Tape.
But then the A/C and furnace people found that it would hold air vents together and seal leaks pretty well therefore it became Duct Tape as we know it today. Oh yes, it can practically fix anything too.

Believe it or not, duct tape is not a good thing to use on ducts because the warmth will dry it out and it will fall off. It's probably not good for much else either, at least not as a long term fix. Might be good for a few weeks and that's it.

Duct tape is very versable and can fix most anything. In a somewhat odd twist, it doesnt work well on air ducts where it was built for.

I've been in trades for a very long time and have a quote.
"If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape. If it doesn't move but should, use WD40."
Certainly that's a tongue in cheek thought, but they seem to be 2 of the most important "tools" anyone can have handy.

If I had to add a third, it might be velcro,,,especially the adhesive backed type.

overlook now not the hammer. yet heavily, duct tape wasn't meant for some thing heat or moist. And in those circumstances the region you like duct tape retaining means without the residue, attempt gaffer's/ingredient tape.
