A two-spirit person is a reference to people who are biologically of one sex but exhibit traits of another gender in some Native American cultures. Originally it was a isolated term but it is more recently been extended and adopted by most native American groups.
People who are two-spirit maybe what we call in the western world as gay, transgender, transsexual and or transvestite. It could be a combination of any of theres or something as simply a male who excels at what is considered a females work.
There is some evidence to suggest that gender in many Native American cultures has more to do with work skill than sexual preference.
Finally two-spirits traditionally have more spiritual or religious standing and obligations than a standard person in many Native American cultures.
Sex as used in this answer is a reference to the physical structure of a persons body. A persons sex is based on if you have a penis or vagina.
Gender as used in this answer is a reference to which roles, personality traits and activities that a culture believes that different sex's should exhibit.

In American Indian culture, homosexuals were viewed as having 2 spirits -one of the sex they showed outwardly & one of the other sex. This was not looked down upon, but rather revered as being special. A 2-spirit person would be a gay/lesbian person.
