How far do you have to be dilated before an Epidural is no longer an option? If the pain gets too bad during labor, I want to know approximately how much time I have to change my mind from natural to meds. My first birth, I was in labor for 20 hours and I heard subsequent births are shorter. Is it 6 cm? Thanks!

Well they made me wait so long to get my epidural with my first child (no idea why) that by the time they gave it to me I was 9cm and needless to say it never did take effect. My dr. I have this time told me I can get it anytime I want it. So I recommend you dont wait too long to ask as they may not be in any hurry to make you comfortable. I am past due and will be induced on Friday if things dont move along on their own and have decided to ask for it very early. I dont want to suffer this time around. I have also heard that second labors are usually shorter too. I was also induced with my first child and was only in labor for 6 hours. So for me I figure I dont have too much time to fool around before getting my meds. Good luck to you.

We were told over and over that you had a window for the epidural after which it would be too late. HOWEVER my first labor was super long, and the baby started to struggle and I was exhausted, and my doctor encouraged me to get an epidural so that my body and the baby could relax the stress a little, and I recieved one at about 8 1/2 or 9 cm dialated. So it can be done pretty late. And yes, the second baby will probably be much faster, but no less painful :)

there is in maximum circumstances a window in there, they're waiting to grant you the epidural mutually as you're between 4 and 7 centimeters dilated. something earlier will sluggish down your hard work and make it complicated for hard work to strengthen. yet for some objective after 7 it quite is only too previous due for the epidural (even nevertheless to be trouble-free i'm now not sure why). As long as you get to the hospital in the previous than you get to 7, you would be intense-high quality. I evaluate after that, you're only too just about giving start up and it is going too rapid that the epidural won't have time to kick in in the previous than the teen.

I had an emergency epidural (if there is such a thing) because my blood pressure was skyrocketing and my daughter was in distress. (Labor was 52 hours.) The anaesthesiologist said I was on the edge of not being able to have it, no matter the circumstances, and that was at 8-8.5 cm.

They ended up having to use my epidural line for my emergency C-section....

They insert it at 6 cm I think. I wouldn't really know as I always get to the hospital and hear the words push immediately. :( I'm hoping to have an epidural with this one though!! Good luck! :)

I think it's around 7 cm. With my babies once I hit 7 they were out within an hour so if you want pain meds don't mess around waiting.

I think it is 6-ask your ob/gyn. Every labor is different, but usually after the first, it goes faster.
