I have a 1990 Nissan and it needs a valve job. I took it to a mechanic and he quoted me $1000. for parts and labor, is this reasonable? or is he trying to take me for my money ( I am a female!)

take your car to a place that specialises in car engine heads and get them to quote it as some mechanics like to rip you off as you may not need to replace all the valves.

I think that is about $300.00 too high. Shop around. Take it to a dealer.
A valve looks a lot like a big thumbtack. They open and close to let the air/fuel mixture in and they let exhaust gasses out.

This is reasonable. There is considerable labor involved in the process. The upper part of the motor must be dismantled, removed, machined, and replaced along with gasketing and other issues.

Seems reasonable but will probably get hire after he takes it apart. The valve opens and lets fuel in or exhaust out.
