the older, the better. Get what you can afford, if it's a spinet or upright you are after then I'm guessing the audience at the Met won't be dissappointed over the sound quality. The only one who needs to appreciate it is YOU.

For an upright, you just can't beat a Kawaii. They are great-sounding. Also, an old player upright grand always sounds the best because the strings are as long as those on a baby grand, and you can usually find those for next to nothing and sometimes people will give them away if you'll move it. I have 4 right now!

Kawai K-2 is excellent value. Their small studio upright is perfect for someone that has a budget. Their actions and sound are a notch above for so little outlay. A beginner-novice-intermediate player doesn't need more. Once you become truly advanced and professional, a better or bigger piano might be desired.
