Smoking will cause slight suffocation of the brain while and shortly after getting "a fix". The brain is a wonderful thing and can rebuild brain cells lost during that time. The real concern is the persons addiction. Say the Pilot for example is on a 10 hour flight by the third hour without nicotine the persons conscious and sub conscious decision making process is completely over taken by "need". Thus causing that person to be irritable and unlikely able to give 100% of brain capacity to the current task.

A 2005 study suggested that long-term smoking may dim the speed and accuracy of a person's thinking and actually lower IQ. This is of real concern with older people who are struggling to hold onto brain function. In the short term, a smoker may feel a burst of clearer thinking, when he is smoking, as the nicotine makes him feel temporarily sharper. That will not help your hypothetical airline pilot, who can't smoke on the plane and may be distracted by a craving for cigarettes.

Smoking is no good for any part of the body and there must be something wrong with someone's brain for even wanting to smoke in the first place. If God had wanted us to smoke we would have been born with a chimney on our head.

Yes it does. There is all kinds of bad stuff in cigarette smoke including carbon monoxide which negatively impact your brain.

There have been studies that show that people who smoke have slower reactions times as well as not being able to retain information for later recall.

This includes people who do not themselves smoke but who do inhale second-hand smoke.
