Yes it has, in Roman times it was used as a form of payment. The word Salary derives from the word salt.

Salt was used for money at one time.
Also, Lot's wife, from the bible was turned into a pillar of salt. I think it was her anyway.

it was used to cure meat and fish to prevent spoilage..helpful on long sea voyages and during times of war..extended shelf life of these foods...wasn't a perfect system
