The universe is said to be expanding if all distant galaxies recede from each other at a speed proportional to their separation. The proportionality constant is called the Hubble constant. That is, expansion can be defined locally. As for Grokking how an infinite universe (which may or may not be the case) can get any bigger, well, twice infinity is still infinity.

ok, think about Newton's laws of physics, specificaly the first one

"an object at rest will stay at rest, an object in motion will stay in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force"

Now, Lets not get into a theological arguement here so lets asume that the Big Bang really happened.

All that force from that explosion has shot the mass outward, and there is nothing there to slow them down, so, they'll keep goin.

Im pretty sure, you'll ask "dosn't gravity slow them down?"

well, scientists have figured out that Gravity simply isn't strong enough, that should give you the gist of it!

there are certain forces between objects in the universe. so, as a result of repelling each other, the universe expands itself. plus there are new stars and galaxies are formed every second, so it will expand.

Space does end. It can be measured by distance and time travelled. It ends.
