I have used cinnamon. The ants won't cross a line of cinnamon for some reason.

Iv'e heard that they will not cross a chalk line? never tried this so not sure if it works or not
I have put out piles of grits they eat it and it causes them to die . best thing is to buy the ant traps just punch out the holes in the small cans set out and the ants crawl in eat the bait and die.

Put little piles of cornmeal where ants come in. They will take it to the colony and try to eat it but they can't digest it so they die. It takes awhile but is safe around pets and babies.

Try ground cloves (not the stuff that has been sitting in your cabinet for years, but something relatively fresh), cinnamon, paprika.
