Hey I am 14 years old and I am trying out for a program at my church. I have always loved singing and the try-outs for our christmas program is coming up very soon. I already have a voice teacher I visit weekly and I was hoping I could get some extra tips on how to strengthen my voice and make it sound more even. Thanks for the advice!

What do you mean by "sound more even"?
Speaking as a singer/teacher who has been in the business for a number of years, if you are talking about the transition from head to chest voice, this is what I tell my students: using an /oo/ sound go from the top down on a light sigh, (you don't want to push your voice farther than it is capable of singing EVER) then when that seems comfortable try from the bottom up and back down increase the higher you go and the lower each time and use your index finger to guide your voice not the other way around. This will help to smooth out the "break" that most of us singers have. Be sure to inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth, and before doing any type of vocalise, S-T-R-E-T-C-H first!!! Music is a total body experience. Make sure that when you breathe that you do not breathe solely from your chest but rather, in your mind, see the breath go through your body through the floor and down into the middle of the earth. This will give you a more grounded feeling. Not knowing what voice type that you presently are it is difficult to give any other suggestions beyond using pure "Italian" vowels for your vocalizing. I hope this helps, any other information that you can give about yourself, Musically speaking, will be helpful to give any further assistance.

Practice the scales every day after school and after you practice with your voice teacher. I have some older friends who are in a band and they recommend drinking a teaspoon of honey It helps to loosen up the vocal cords so you can sing better

Breathe into your diaphram, not into your lungs. Your voice will sound much more powerful if you do just that, although I am sure you have been told that countless times. I know I have! I'm fourteen too, and also a singer.

Good luck getting into the musical!

Practise scales. You can also do breathing exercises that help strengthen the lungs and increase your lung capacity.
