Because it is set in the south and the blacks had a worse time there getting their rights than up north (not to say they didn't have a hard time there also, but it was worse in the south).

At this time, the South was a very racist place. The racism is really what drives the plot.

because of the time you would understand it better and why there was so much predjudice you could check out sparknotes.com and search for the book....they have everything on it...i love that book
