Box turtles are considered about as smart as a white rat, an they show strong evidence of learning and retaining info for long times.

The key to ANY memory of course, is how useful the memory is. They remember their territories, etc. real well, recognize and remember who feeds them regualrly, and so on. They do not do well, however, on learning 'tricks'- just no survival value for them.

I used to have box turtles and I trained them to do "sit down", "roll" and stuff. Then I went to walmart to buy something for half an hour and came back. Meanwhile they forgot everything I taught and now they don't even know I am their master. Stupid Turtles.
