high mileage oil is not a gimmick. It really does work. I have seen it in many of my customers vehicles. Right now is a good time to start. The bottle will say 75k miles but 70k miles is good. True it does have a seal sweller in it. But it really seems to work if you have bad valve guides. It will not stop engine leaks nor is it designed to. And it does not claim to. If you get your oil changed say every 5000 miles and you don't use any oil then you probably don't need it. Up to a quart is normal use between oil changes. Any thing over a quart is excessive and you should try the high mileage.

I grew up in a very small town and High School was were all the activity was except for getting drunk and making out. I even did some of that at school. LOL It's hard to believe I survived High School and I was an "A" Student. School is were Girls were and were I played Football so I had a blast. It didn't hurt that by the time I started High school my Dad had quit drinking (He was one of the worst alcoholics I have ever seen) . Mom was still a pain but Dad and I became best friends, So I guess my view of my High school years is a little biased. The School Dances were big events in a small town that had one movie theater with just one screen, no fast food restaurants and no malls. We didn't get Rock Concerts coming within 150 miles so I didn't see my first Live Concert until I went away to college unless you count local bands playing at the Dances.

What you have been using will server you fine....
High mileage oils have just retained SL add packs, and tend to be thicker then they're regular counterparts (ie take pennzoil and pennzoil high mileage... regular may be around 10.5 cst, while high mil. will be around 12 cst..., a high 30 weight)
And contains seal conditioners at a heavier concentration...
Though I would like to warn you... if it has the 3.1 liter..... have that intake manifold gasket replaced with a felpro!!! gm had trouble with the gasket design and the coolant... it gets into the oil when it starts to leak.... this goes for the 3.4 as well.

I would wait until 100,000 miles or more. But, I wonder if this high mileage oil is just a gimmick to charge you more for oil that works no better than the regular kind.

I would switch to the sythetic oils. You do not have to change the oil as frequently ( every 3 months) and it is better for the transmission as a whole. My Impala got 210,000 miles.

It's never too late to start. High mileage oil won't do any harm to average mileage cars.

the term "high mileage oil" is just a sales pitch, always use a good quality oil and you will be fine.

Right now would be good. The 3.8 liter engine lasts about 200,000 miles with proper maintence. The 3.1 liter about 160,000miles
