Bill Clinton may not be the greatest living American, but I greatly respect him. Forget the partisan politics, forget the waste of time that Monicagate was, and focus for a moment on what he's done since he's left office. His humanitarian efforts:
Led a nationwide campaign to help the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
Selected by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to head the United Nations earthquake and tsunami relief and reconstruction effort.
Raised money for relief of the disaster through the USA Freedom Corps.
Coordinated (along with George H. W. Bush) private relief donations for Hurrican Katrina victims.
His William J. Clinton Foundation does all sorts of great work around the world.

The greatest LIVING American? Boy, what a loaded question, because anyone's answer is bound to be held in heated dispute by a large chunk of people. I like the personal answers--mothers, grandparents; I personally would vote for my mother, or my second, fourth, or sixth grade teachers, or even a few people I go to church with. If you mean someone of national or international importance, you'll get several different opinions, each of which might have his or her own merits. I admire many individuals, but would be hard pressed to name a single favourite. (Bill Clinton, of course, is beneath contempt, and Hillary isn't much better.)

That depends on how you define greatness and which facets are being compared. It would be quite a challenge to effectively and objectively identify the greatest living American. Greatness is in the eye of the beholder...
