The whole tube with the nut rotted away from the intake manifold. We tried to get the remainder of the nut out of the manifold with an ez out, but no luck. Could an auto shop retap the hole without replacing the intake manifold?

Do not drill it, There is a tool made for taking them out, but sometimes it won't work either, I think I got mine from K D tools.
The only other way to take it out is to get a 24 tooth hacksaw blade, grind the back of the blade down for about two inches on the end that has the teeth pointing towards you.( you must saw on the pull stroke) Very carefully saw two slots 180 degrees apart in the broken piece, just saw enough to cut down to the threads. You can then pry the two pieces away from the intake, and pull them out with needle nose pliers. Just be sure not to saw too far,go slow and easy. Put some good pipe sealer on the new fitting. When you get the new fitting, ask your dealer for the heavier one if he has it.

This is a common problem. The factory hose connection is some sort of soft metal, I'm not sure what, and they never seem to last. I have done several of these and have not needed to pull the manifold yet. The thing is to make sure that when you drill the part out that you can remove all of the drill shavings. There are replacement connections at most auto stores.

This is a very common failure, and there is a tool made specifically for this. It is manufactured by K-D Tools, and is in essence an easy-out, but it is designed for this particular pot-metal fitting. The tool is < $8.00 and nearly ALL Quality parts houses either have it or can order it quickly.
While you are at the parts store, ask for a replacement fitting for the correct size heater hose, and ask them for a STEEL replacement. The original design is about $7.50 and the steel is about $10.00. Very well worth the difference in cost.

Good Luck

sounds like your friend needs to take better care of his vehicles. as far as the auto shop question, a good shadetree mechanic may be able to, but keep in mind you are asking about an AUTO SHOP. Two words...MONEY HUNGRY. Probably not.
