You must prove your answer by finding the common denominator, do this by multiplying the denominators to both the numerator and denominator of the other fraction, like this: 3/5 x 8/8 = 24/40, and 2/8 x 5/5 = 10/40. When common denominator found, 3/5 is greater, because 24 out of 40 is greater than 10 out of 40.

Let's find a common denominator first.
O.K., 40
3/5=24/40 and 2/8= 10/40 therefore,
since 24 is greater than 10
3/5 mile > 2/8 mile

To compare you would make them into the same I would reduce 2/8 to 1/4
and then make them both into 20's
3/5 would equal 12/20
1/4 or 2/8 would equal 5/20
so 3/5 would be larger.

3/5 is farthest. 3/5 is also 24/40 and 2/8 is 10/40.

3/5 = 60% of a mile.
2/8 = 25% of a mile
3/5 is the larger of the two, or the further distance.

If you're talking about the distances three fifths of a mile or two eighths of a mile the standard answer is to get the two numbers to "agree" on the divisor (the number you are dividing by).
The "simple" way to do this, is to multiply each side by the other. So for example, since five times eight is 40. The initial answer will be whatever over forty.
Since you had to multiply the first divisor by eight, you must also multiply its dividend by eight (and so for the second, the dividend would be multiplied by five).
So you come out with 24/40 and 10/40.
Now the answer becomes obvious. Since we know that 24 is greater than 10, three fifths MUST be greater than two eighths.

3/5. 2/8 reduces to 1/4, which is smaller than 3/5.
