There is absloutely nothing that will eliminate them forever, the reproduce and come in the smallest of cracks, they are in search of water, and there is just many things that you can do to ward them off, fill cracks with sos pads, and put poisin in the crawl space, and or the basement, and trap the parents before they reproduce, there are glue pads, do not discard the traps that you catch something in they are favorable to the smells that there were friends there before... they follow the same path that their friends go so take careful observation to the paths and trap perpendicular to the wall so they do not have to cross the top... have fun...

Contact your local pest control company - there are products that can be planted outside (similar to termite prevention) that keep mice out (or kill them before they get too far into your house).
If you've got active mice, a cheap, effective solution is to buy the simple traps, but load them with Cheerios smeared with a little peanut butter. Mice love peanut butter (don't know why!). We usually tie down the Cheerio with string so that the mouse can't steal the Cheerio.

Stuff steel wool around all plumbing under sinks and vanities, check for any areas that they may be getting into the house and get them repaired. If you have a crawl space spread some moth balls around in the crawl space, mice don't like the smell of moth balls. Set out poision in the basement or crawl space, and get a nice house cat, even tho you feed a house cat they will still kill the mice, may not eat them but they will kill them

Get a cat with a taste for mice!
Seriously, some mice will smell a cat and not even bother coming around, but there is always the one or two brave mice.

Mouse traps at every entrance. Adopt a few cats.
A good house-keeper to clean your house.
Get some gloves and trash bags for the dead mice.
Don't use poison... those mice may touch your belongings.

Go get some good caulking and aluminum foil, and fill all of the cracks and holes in your house so they can't get in. You can also put bait traps outside, provided there are no other animals that could get to them and be harmed.
