Because boredom causes people to want to drum a little beat but they're not going to waste money to buy drumsticks just to make a simple beat when they're bored. Like when people play air guitar when listening to music, its something to do but there's no reason to waste money on a guitar if you're just going to imitate the strumming of a guitar and not actually play.

Some people are right and left - they use both sides of their brains at one time. The creative side will hear rhythm and the "drumming" with their pencils seems to balance their analytical side -- sometimes this makes it easier to concentrate on a subject which would otherwise be ignored.

are you talking about in class or playing actual drums? well, if ur talking about in class, i do it all the time. people drum with there pencils because they're either bored or practicing for band (there's or band CLASS). if ur talking about actual drumming on a trap set, then they do that because
1.) they can't find their actual drum stix/don't have any
2.) or they just feel like acting stupid like that.

Because there are many different types of people and one type is assertive people. these people tend to fidget with their hands and fingers quite a lot so when they have a pencil in their hands then its drum time.

They want to show anyone who might be looking that they know how the song goes. They want to show they are able to do that drum-thing you're hearing, but they don't have their drum set handy. It also shows they like it, like when people play air-guitar, or air-piano, or hold a pretend-microphone up when they're pretend-singing. It's just pretend, man.

Because they're bored & they wanna be a drummer when they grow up. Trust me, I've sat next to someone in school and they drummed all the time. it gets annoying, but u can tell that they have rhythm, which is good. but ANYWAY, they're bored and stuff, so, it's just what they do.

Because they don't have drum sticks handy. I do it all the time. You just go with the music and drum to the music.
