I WAS THERE............It was the BIG GAME of 1982.
Cal and Stanford are arch rivals.
They play one football game a year against each other.
It is usually the last regular season game.
Harvard vs. Yale is known as THE GAME.
Cal vs. Stanford is known as THE BIG GAME.
What occurred at the end of the 1982 BIG GAME is simply known as ................ THE PLAY.

In the Big Game of 1982, a highly favored Stanford Cardinal team made an unbelievable comeback behind the heroics of All-American quarterback John Elway to take a 20-19 lead via a field goal with only 4 seconds remaining. The Stanford team and fans were delrious with excitement. Stanford was given a 15 yard penalty (to be imposed on the ensuing kickoff) because their team came on the field to clelbrate taking the lead (winning the game?). The field had to be cleared for the kickoff.

The capacity crowd in Cal's Memorial Stadium (Berkeley), including the the California Golden Bear fans (about 70% of the attendance), assumed the ensuing kickoff (after the field goal) would be a mere formality;................. but, they were wrong! As then Cal coach Joe Kapp had often stated: "The bear will never quit, the bear will never die."

Stanford kicked from south to north. The kickoff was a "squib" kick, caught by one of Cal's "up players" (not a deep return man). He ran a short distance and then lateraled to another Cal player. About this time time, the Stanford band, anticipating the end of the game, rushed onto the field to celebrate. The band occupied the west side of an area roughly between the south endzone and the south 20 yard line.

Meanwhile Cal was advancing the ball on the west side of the field towards the south (Stanford) endzone, while lateraling the ball 5 times. The final Cal ball carrier "waltzed" through the Stanford band (in effect, the band screened him from the Stanford defenders) and into the endzone; knocking over a trombone player as he crossed the goal line.

The referees confered for about 4 minutes (it seemed like hours) before giving the signal that Cal had scored. The extra point was not attempted. The final score was 25-19.
