Ed is my favorite manager at Safeway. He's a grandfatherly Italian man with a New York accent. I adore him. But yesterday he made a comment that made me a bit uncomfortable. An Asian woman asked me to bag an already bagged item, so I did. After she'd left, Ed said, "Orientals are the most wasteful people in the world. They buy a pack of gum and they want you to bag it. And it's not just her, they're all like that. Orientals are so wasteful." I'm not sure what to do. I love Ed. Is the comment technically racial? Should I maybe talk to the Store Manager about what he said? What should I do?

That is a very racist comment indeed. If you have a good enough relationship with him then talk to him and try to see his point of view and then tell him yours (talking to the manager could get him fired). Try to convince him that it is wrong and explain to him why it is wrong (because he is placing a whole race of people under one stereotype and is letting the actions of what he has seen/heard about make his decision that all Asian people are the same).

You could also tell him that the US waists more food and other resources than any other country.

If he's right, it isn't racism. For example, when people from other countries say that Americans drive around in gas guzzling SUVs and eat too much, they're not wrong. The question is, is he right? I've purchased plenty of items that I didn't need bagged, but the clerk bagged them anyway. Perhaps she's gotten used to America's bag-everything policy. Was the item relatively sharp that it might puncture a bag, or did it contain liquid?

Tell Ed that next to Orientals that the Dago's are the most wasteful people in the world. See how he responds

I think you should say something to Ed and if he continues tell the store manager.

Put your head down , do your job, and keep your mouth shut. You have no idea what the life experiences of this man are. You are in no position to "help" him think differently about this subject nor any other.

Be sure what you believe in because if you don't believe in something you will fall for anything.
Peace to you

In my opinion you missed your opportunity this time. Next comment, point out to him that it sounds racist to you and you are offended by it. If he persists after you have asked him to stop, then talk with the store manager.

no no no no! You don't say anything. You will encounter ignorant comments forever. They don't hurt you or anyone if the person they are talking about doesn't hear them. Just smile and keep working. You may not agree but who cares.

if you go to the store manager, you will look like a whiner. it's pretty petty.
next time, have a backbone and make a comment back like, "you are perpetuating prejudice and negativity by making statements like that; i know many asians who are not wasteful, and many people of other races who are".

I worked in a store and found it was the blacks that mostly needed a bag for every stick of gum, I guess they figure its free so why not.
