A lot of games on the ps2 are long and without a memory card you cant save any of them and go back to them later, you would need to play the entire game and anything you do manage to unlock in certain games is lost without saving

Because without a memory card to save your games with if you play up to a high level in the game and then the power goes out or you stop playing then all your progress will be lost. The PS2 doesn't have a built-in memory or "hard drive" so you will need a memory card.

The PS2 uses DVDs as the medium for the software. The DVD drive in the PS2 is a read-only drive, and hence unable to store any data. Thus a separate read/write storage device is required to save data - aka flash memory card.
Old cartridge console games with save game data (such as Zelda on the old 8-bit Nintendo) had battery powered flash memory inside the gold cartridge.

The PS2 memory cards will act like those USB flash drives that you use on your computer, except they save game data for the Play Station 2. If you do not have one, you will have to start that game all over form the beginning when you turn the game off.

The PS2 doesnt have a built in memory system (hard drive) like the Xbox does. If he ever wants to save his games he has to have the memory card.

He needs the memory card to save progress in his games. Buy the 2-pack, you get them cheaper that way! Gamestop has good prices on them!

Well Playstations dont have harddrives like computers so, an external harddrive (memory card) is needed to save the prgress of your game.
