4y = 2(y - 5) - 2
first you distribute the 2
4y = 2y - 10 -2
combine any like terms
4y = 2y - 12
move the 2y over
4y - 2y = 2y -12
2y = -12
divide by 2
y = -6
go back
4 (-6) = 2 (-6 -5) - 2
-24 = 2 (-11) -2
-24 = -22 - 2
-24 = -24 Checks!

4y=2(y-5)-2 is impossible to solve for y because it is in both sides of the equation inorder to solve for a variable u most know all other variables but if you break the equation down a little you can get close to the answer divide both sides by 2 and u get 2y=(y-5)-2 then add 2 to both sides to get 4y=y-5 the fact is the equation is not logical

4y = 2(y - 5) -2
4y = 2y - 10 - 2 (Subtract 2y from both sides)
2y = -12 (Divide both sides by 2)
y = -6
Check:
4(-6) = 2((-6) - 5) - 2
-24 = 2(-11) - 2
-24 = -22 - 2
-24 = -24
