Try the Land Registry. Try your local Council. When you say claim I assume you mean you'd like to be the owner. You are probably thinking of so called 'squatters rights' or ownership by adverse possession. Afraid not - it used to be that if you used a piece of land that didn't belong to you, openly and without the owners permission and kept other people off it after 12 yrs - you could in some circumstances go on to effectively become the owner - any form of consent by the owner defeated a claim you haven't been there long enough, as you might expect there's more to it as well than this simple outline, and I understand the rules have been changed / changing recently anyway.

You need to know the actual postal address of the land or specific location. Then see a solicitor to do a land search. This will reveal the registered owner.

Don't think about claiming it for free but perhaps make an offer for it unless it is part of your own property you could find yourself in trouble with the owner.

Good luck

Try the land registry database. Remember however, there are millions of acres of UK land which are not registered - much of which belongs to the aristocracy who've owned it since 1066.

If the land adjoins yours, and you place a fence around it, treat it as yours, it becomes your property after nine years.
This is known in law as 'squatters fights'. There was a famous case in London, where an Irish tramp squatted on land, where he had to be compensated only last year for such a situation.

Are their property taxes in your area? If so, whoever is in charge of collecting the taxes should have records who the owner is. If not, try whoever records deeds when property is sold. I'm in the US so I don't know details of UK properties.

If it is possible to claim the property, you would have to go though one of the authorities above at some point.

Land registry.

Go to their website and there is clear links to request detail of ownership, title, covenents etc.
Only costs a few pounds, and if its not already data held online then they actually do a physical document search......... just for you !.
