2(-3a + 5) = -8(a + 4)
distribute the 2 and the 8
-6a +10 = -8a - 32
Now get your variable on one side
and your constants on the other and it doesn't
matter which way
-6a+10 = -8a -32 or -6a+10 = -8a -32
+8a-10 +8a-10 +6a+32 =+6a+32
Then do your math
2a + 0 = O -42 or 0 +42 = -2a +0
divide by 2 Divide by -2
a = -21 a = -21
Go back and check
2 (-3(-21)+5) = -8( -21+4)
2 (63+5) = -8(-17)
2 (68) = 136
136 = 136 so it checks!
Are we doing your homework for you??

2(-3a + 5) = -8(a + 4)
-6a + 10 = -8a - 32 (Add 8a to both sides and subtract 10 from both sides)
2a = -42 (Divide both sides by 2)
a = -21
Check:
2(-3(-21) + 5) = -8((-21) + 4)
2(63 + 5) = -8(-17)
2(68) = 136
136 = 136
