There is nothing wrong with asbestos in most cases, unless you are disrupting it for some reason. Asbestos is one of the best insulators found unfortunately it can be hard on your health if you work with it a lot in its powdered form. If you need some removed you should have a experienced person do it. The dust mask from the hardware store will not keep all the small fibers out.

In Canada the owner of the building is on the hook for the removal and it has to be what is called an abatement with the asbestos being double bagged and take to the appropriate landfill
