The religion of Islam is absolutely NOT based on violence or any of the other things you describe. That's a huge, sad misconception---one that we urgently need to straighten out so the East and West can understand each other.

Religion is full of emotion. It's based on a need to feel safe by having a relationship with an approving higher Power. This has been true ever since the first primitive religions began, back when we crouched in caves and prayed to the terrifying "gods" of thunder and lightning to be our friends. Later, the idea of life after death appeared, to address people's fears of dying. Unfortunately, all of this need often leaves people vulnerable to wrong ideas.

Through history, there have always been a few who have taken advantage of this emotional vulnerability by twisting the ideas of religion and using them for their own purposes.

This is certainly not unique to Islam. It's happened many, many times in Christianity. For nearly 300 years, the Crusaders traveled Europe, torturing and burning at the stake anyone they suspected of being unfaithful to the Catholic Church. Hitler used Christian images and ideas to spearhead the Nazis's dark march. And cult leaders like Jim Jones have lead groups of trusting followers to their deaths, promising eternal redemption and Paradise.

The extremists of Islam are no different. They have twisted a religion based on love and peace, into a political tool of persecution and terror. They're certainly not the first, nor will they be the last, to do such things.

The vast majority of Muslims (followers of Islam) believe in tolerance, peace, and brotherhood, and they condemn the relatively few who have cast a shadow over their ancient religion. (Did you know that the word "Islam" is derived from the word "salaam", which means "peace"?)

Just keep reading, and learning, and talking to people who know what's really going on, and this truth will become apparent to you. (I'm not a follower of any particular religion, but a student of all of them.)

Also keep in mind that there are very powerful Western interests that want to keep whipping up fear and anger against Islam, to justify unbelievable military budgets and the gradual replacement of Eastern cultures with Western consumer markets.

That's right---a lot of this just has to do with selling things and making money. Lots of money. Wherever that much money can be made, there's great motivation to influence and distort public opinion---and we're seeing a lot of that too.

Cheers, Ander

There are good Muslims, and there are bad Muslims. But aren't there also good Christians, and bad Christians? Good Catholics and bad Catholics? Good Jews and bad Jews? It's not so much religion, more so environmental influences, personality traits, values. There is no such thing as a religion that is solely bad.

The reason why you believe this is probably because you only listen to what the media says, which a lot of is bad. There needs to be a balance. You can't have just one source when you're investigating a story. You need to get info. from several media sources, maybe the Internet, and then use your judgement to create your own information. Otherwise, you'll be a stupid follower of the media, and I don't mean that to insult you.

Try to get a Quran in English and read it. You'd be surprised. Any questions email me at ahmad53238@yahoo.com. Again, I don't mean to make this sound cruel or mean or bad, it's just coming out that way. Please understand that my intentions are to help you understand Islam and its followers better.

Oh, by the way, I'm a Muslim. Has that really so negatively affected your perception/thoughts on this answer?

Well, either your being very sarcastic or just ignorant about the whole issue. Neither islam nor muslim people believ that killing rewards you. It is not in the religion. Islam preaches Peace, Its a different story that some people take the religion and do whatever they want with it. Just like many christains claim that pre-marital sex isnt a sin. Now, if the people who follow islam, or some of them, decide to misuse it and then disgrace it, its not the religions fault. Did anyone say in the constitution that you may kill and lable people as terrorist in order to gain some profit out of oil from Iraq. Point is , No islam doesnt preach hatred. Maybe the United States should spend that $2 billion dollars they are spending to block the Mexican territory, and invest it in educating about different religions, The ends doesnt justify the means.

History---Muslims have 840 million followers. It was founded by th prophet Muhammad, who received the holy scriptures of Islam, Koran , from Allah(God) c.A.D. 610 . Muhammad is the last in a long line of holy prophets, preceded by Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. In addition to being devoted to the Koran, followers of Islam(Muslims) are devoted to worship Allah through the Five Pillars. The two main divisions of Islam are the Sunni and the Shite, the Wahabis are the most important Sunni sect, while the Shiite sects include the Assassins, the Druses, and the Fatimids, among countless others.

This is not true the Qura'an doesn't said that
if some people are trying to make the Islam bad religion this doesn't mean we have to think about the Islam on this way
Remember all religions are the same just the deference is a little
but Finlay the the principle are the same and enough thinking on this way they are not trying to kill any body the they are trying to get them land back

Well Tonya,

Consider this... there is not much difference between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. There really isn't. They teach pretty much the same thing.

"Truth is Truth, regardless of who speaks it." - Lewis Gossett Jr.

Now, consider this. Poverty breeds hate, desperation, loneliness, depression, etc. Unfortunately, in the traditionally Islamic states, there is a HUGE gap between the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS. Wherever this gap exists, there is a large group of desperate people. Traditionally, these people hate those they see as unusually blessed. We in the U.S. are unusually blessed. If you feel that the attacks have been directed against Christians or Jews, please consider the fact that the deaths in Iraq are mostly Muslims. It isn't religious... that is what they want you to believe... it is actually a class struggle between the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS.

my family are muslims, & personally, i believe the 'islamic terrorists' are not muslims at all. the word 'islam' is old arabic for 'peace,' which is what our people are SUPPOSE to keep. we're suppose to pray for peace for all, i honestly have no idea what the crazy terrorists are thinking, but whatever it is, it ISN'T very islamic AT ALL!

when christianity was born, it branched off directly into 2 other major religions, being judism & islam. the god we worship in islam is the same exact god christains and jewish people worship. the name we've chosen (allah) is simply the arabic word for 'god.' the reason why we say this is because muslims want to keep in touch with the original teachings and names of our religion, whereas other religions began to translate these words into their own languages. it's nothing against the other religions at all, it's just one of the little things we do. :P

before you start bashing a religion, research it.

You need to learn more about life than anyone here cares to teach you. Muslims don't believe in that at all. It's the radical Islamists. Saying that all Muslims want us dead is a great deal like saying that all Christians desire to go to non-christian nations and kill off the non-conformists over there.
