The story is an analogy for Socialism, everyone is supposed to be equal and everything is shared equally (work, food etc.). At first it worked out OK but then the pigs decided they were better than all the other animals and (like someone else said) they end up being over thrown like the humans in the beginning. Orwell was saying that socialism is a nice thought but it will never work because someone is always saying they are better and deserve more than someone else. Bottom line, men are pigs. I love this story, I read it in grade school and we covered it in sociology in college. There is an animated version and another that has real animals that appear to be talking.

I hated the book when I had to read it in sixth grade. Now, I teach it to ninth graders.
The site another answerer gave (www.sparknotes.com) is your best bet. However, please make sure you use this in addition to reading the story--not just in place of it.
Animal Farm is a book about animals kicking their master off the farm, but it is also much more than that. It is a political allegory mirroring the political turmoil in Russia in the 20th century.

There was a revolution in Russia. Communism, a system where everybody works for the benefit of everybody and everybody benefits equally is instituted. The leaders of the revolution become leaders of the new system and quickly become corrupt. They benefit more than others and essentially become that which they revolted against.

animals overtake the humans because the people decide everything for them. soon after, pigs take over all the animals and change things around to their advantage and the other animals are just SOL. then the pigs become just as bad as the humans were and in the end, the pigs and humans start to join forces and the rest of the animals are just in the same position they were in to start with
